The newest version of the Emtree thesaurus launched in Embase on STNext on January 29, 2024. Emtree is a critical resource for the most updated terminology in biomedicine, pharmacology and medical devices, and is updated three times per year.
The latest Emtree version adds 321 new drug terms and 1,012 non-drug terms. The thesaurus now contains 98,776 preferred terms and about 500,000 synonyms. The new version of Emtree incorporates the latest additions to the MeSH, the thesaurus used for MEDLINE.
Highlights of the new version include:
- Expansion of the "head and neck tumor" branch to include 292 new diseases. While the previous version of the Emtree included five sub-branches in the head and neck tumor branch, the new version adds a sixth sub-branch, Upper Aero-Digestive Tract Tumors (UADT).
- The extension of the "metabolic disorder" branch to include 453 new concepts. Revisions were made to the terminologies for disorders of carbohydrate metabolism, carboxylic acid metabolism and hormone metabolism, as well as to the terminology of mitochondrial myopathies.
- Updated taxonomies and terminology for various infections, including parasitoses, respiratory tract infections, prion diseases and communicable diseases.
- The addition of over 500 new medical device trade names.
Customers running Alerts in Embase are encouraged to review the latest additions and changes to Emtree to determine whether their search strategies should be updated to ensure continued comprehensive retrieval.
